SIDE-SADDLE

Lucinda Sims’ grandmother, Betty Skelton, was President of the Ladies Side Saddle Association. In Mrs Skelton’s youth side-saddle riding was the conventional way for ladies to ride. However in the 1930s and 1940s side-saddle’s popularity began to wane in favour of cross saddle riding and by the 1950s and 1960s the art and the teaching of side-saddle had all but disappeared. However in 1974 the Side Saddle Association was formed, and now has over 1,200 members. In 1988 Mrs Skelton, realising there was a shortage of instruction manuals on side-saddle riding, wrote and published “Side Saddle Riding, Notes for Teachers and Riders” (copies of which are still available over the internet).

Lucinda is a registered A Grade side-saddle instructor. She cannot provide instruction on her own horses but is available to instruct riders with their own horses. It may be possible (the size of both horse and rider are factors) for her to lend a side-saddle for the lesson. Side-saddle instruction is given, usually, on a one to one basis.
