STUD NEWS

I am so bad at updating my website so apologies. Having been so many months I’m not sure where to start!

Harlequin, though happy and in regular work, is not standing at stud this season as he has not recovered from his mystery illness last summer. However we have frozen semen at West Kington (www.westkingtonstud.co.uk) and with Tessa Clarke’s advice she will release it only to Vets who meet her approval. Two mares so far have taken first time with one straw so proof of Quin’s potency which is why it is so devastating he not at stud this season.

Queen of the Incas (Cantie) has been sold to a lovely home in Northumberland with Stephen Bell and family and has produced a filly to Jumbo so we wish them so much luck with her and her new dynasty. Her sister Quillota (Ginny) went pointing and ran three times, gaining two 3rds. Sadly she was struck into so has gone to Emperor Fountain as we adore his temperament and confirmation. Their 5 year old brother King’s Quotation (James) by Emperor Fountain is just embarking on his eventing career with Olivia and when she goes to St Andrews in September will be taken on by Ants (Antoinette Mckeowen). Harroway Equinity (Quill) was sold to wonderful friends Brenda and Tanya Ewan and he looks to have a spectacular future with them as, although I am biased, he is truly stunning. Their mother Quote looked so well this spring that we have sent her to the small T.B. stallion Excellente standing with Jane Busch at Dowhills Stud (www.dowhillsstud.com).

My mother stepped in to prevent me selling Moon Fairy and has her with her and she has produced a stunning chestnut filly by Strinesdale Mastermind. Thank goodness for one’s mother!! She is possibly going to Masterpiece this time. Rainbow also was not sold as I turned down the derisory offers made for her and she has had a lovely colt by Master and if I had the money she would go straight back! She is for loan again.

Carnaval Moon (Dolly) a 16.0hh brown mare that has been at livery here for more years than I care to remember has been given to us and has gone to West Kington to use ‘Quin’s frozen semen. Dolly has taken Olivia to the P.C. Champs and has been on the P.C. open teams for 4 years as well as hunting every season with the Heythrop.

To end the stud news all of Quin’s 2008 foals, bar 2, are coloured and we look forward to seeing them out and about. Hopefully pictures and news of them will appear on the blog as and when owners send them in.

HARROWAY NEWS

Having had the trip of a lifetime to New Zealand judging last year I fell so in love with the country that there has been some semi-serious consideration on emigrating if and when Harroway sells. My sister Pip (Phillippa Stacy) and mother (Jinks Bryer) have been to the same show this year and also had a ball and we all agree we wish British exhibitors had the same manners and obvious enjoyment of competing their horses and ponies. This year I was lucky enough to make my 5th trip to judge in South Africa and this time took Edward with me as it during the Easter holidays. If the political situation was more stable I would love to move tomorrow as the flight is easier, no jetlag, lovely climate, food, people and horses. The numbers not so great but beautifully presented and ridden. Jenny Seymour came as well and judged the ponies. Di Nicholson who breeds ponies every bit as good as anything in this country, organized the trip and we were fortunate to stay with the amazing and hospitable Devernuil family. And to cap a wonderful trip we went a walking safari to the magical peaceful Waterberg area in the Limpopo province. Izintaba Lodge (www.izintabalodge.co.za) was the tonic needed to re-charge the batteries prior to the coming season here. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

I am extremely fortunate in my friends, many of who are owners and without whom Harroway couldn’t function. This season Olivia is riding seriously before going up to University at St Andrews. She and and Mrs David Howard (George) are making my life easier and due to their support and invaluable help, both physically and mentally, I have more time for teaching, showing and judging. Even with the uncertainty of our future here, life continues and horses are going really very well and flying the flag.

Our Man – Is loving being jumped by Olivia and we share him. He really is versatile and is about to embark on some shows as well as pure dressage, hunter trialling and pony club.

Harroway Mountain Lark (Larkie) – continues to hunt and is now really George’s horse. He has only done one show but won the riding horses!

Herngate Buccaneer (Buster) – Charlotte Schicht’s horse has busier season this year as he looks marvellous. He has qualified in the weights and ladies for the Royal International and then exceeded all our expectations by winning the Hunter Championship at Bath and West.

Kensons Rose Diamond (Rosie) – Having had a mystery lameness all winter we have been slow to get going but having been BSJA registered has own her first three classes and has started eventing.

Winygrafin (Winni) – Rosemary Penn’s lovely young mare is getting stronger and maturing and should be ready for this summer’s young event horse classes.

Comadreja (Commi) – Joanna and Peter Jensen’s Uruguayan ex-polo pony has just started Intro and Olivia is forming a great partnership.

Jamberoo Jigsaw (Jeffery/Jeffers) - I have ridden Jane Skinner’s homebred middle-weight coloured boy last year and this and he has really come into himself this year and has qualified for the R.I.H.S., CHAPS Nationals and HOYS culminating in a win at Windsor. A huge boost for us all so he can now rest on his laurels till those champs and save some money on diesel!!

Good luck to you all this summer and please do keep in touch through the blog by posting pictures and messages to us (terence.sims@mac.com).

Stud

I thought it might be interesting for present and prospective owners and breeders to see a selection of Harlequin's offspring and give some detail of the type, size and colour of the mares from which they were bred.

Jane Busch’s DOWHILLS SNOW PATROL (Teddy)

Out of a TB mare. Well placed at all County Shows including Reserve Champion at Bath & West and CHAPS South West Champion at Wincanton.

Lyn Holmes’ SOULBURY SOLDIER BOY (Harry)

It was a great pleasure to meet Lyn in person at the CHAPS Nationals and to hear more about Harry . He is coming out with a child next year in Hunter Pony Classes as well as continuing his successful career with Lyn herself.

HOPGARDEN HIDALGO

Also saw at the Nationals this yearling Sally Lyndsell’s bred out of a PB Welsh. He has had a fabulous season with new owner Charlotte Reynolds of Reylem stud winning amongst others Stafford County and the yearling final at CHAPS. He is an exceptional mover and I look forward to seeing his progress next year.

MAPLERIDGE GOOD FRIDAY

Ros seems very pleased with her colt out of a Section B mare who is causing a lot of comment in his area of Cheshire. He has been shown once and won both his classes.

TIDKIN FAIRY TALE

Tidkin Fairy Tale is included in my picture gallery as she is out of Harlequin’s full sister Moon Fairy who is on loan to Steph Towers.

TIDKIN SPIRIT IN THE SKY

Tidkin Spirit in the Sky, out of a middleweight hunter mare, has only been shown twice this season due to the bad back injury having been kicked by another animal in the ring. She was second at the Great Yorkshire. She will be shown extensively as a 3yr old next year

TOM PIGG’S filly foal, out of a warmblood/TB mare, looks to become a star. I look forward to seeing her out and about next year.

EVIE

Evie is also out of a warmblood. She looks to make 15.2 and having seen a video of her she has HOYS Small Riding horse stamped all over her as well as in the coloured classes.

EMMA KELLEY’S FILLY

Emma’s filly is out of a 16.00hh Chestnut TB mare who is in foal again to Harlequin.

GHILLIE DAVIES’ foal is out of a 14.2 Bay Riding Pony mare. She, too, is in foal again to Harlequin.

BETTY is my homebred filly born on the morning of Granny’s memorial service. She is out a 14.2 ex JA coloured jumping mare who is back in foal to Harlequin. Betty is now sold and I wish Suzie and Hannah Bullard lots of luck with her in the future.

JENNIFER LANE’S Northlands Mr Chico is out of the peerless Northlands Main Event, a chestnut 15.00 Show Hunter Pony.

Northlands Mr Chico winning and becoming Reserve Supreme at the Wessex NPS foal show and then going one better at the Welsh Breeders foal show where he upset the Welsh breeders by going Supreme. Tragically his mother, the peerless Northlands Main Event, has died but she has left a stunning legacy in Mr Chico.

MARGARET HAWKINS’ very striking colt is out of a chestnut purebred Arab Mare.

Steve and Kirsty Wilson’s Heiland Tallulahtoo excelled at the British National foal show winning 2 Championships and ending up Overall Reserve Supreme..
